The “Bonecas Pretas” initiative is a project that seeks to give visibility to black women whose stories have been erased or forgotten by official history. The project was created with the aim of changing this reality and offering a new perspective on the formation of Brazilian society, which rarely addresses the trajectory of women in schools.
Conceived by Professor Daniela Torres, the project was born from the realization that the stories of black women are scarce in teaching materials. To fill this gap, the Villa Global Education team dedicated itself to researching and recovering the memory of black women who, throughout history, have had a profound impact, but are rarely mentioned in textbooks.
The inspiring figures were introduced to students in seminars and are now represented by dolls, whose boxes contain stories of their trajectories. According to Daniela Torres, “each doll is not just a toy, but a vehicle of history, carrying with it a narrative of resistance, talent and historical importance”.
The impact of the project goes beyond the classrooms of Villa Global Education. On November 26, the initiative will visit the quilombo in Cachoeira, where cultural and educational activities will be held.
During the visit, the dolls will be donated to a municipal quilombola school, to expand the reach of the initiative and allow more children to have access to these stories of overcoming and strength.
“For these students, contact with these figures will be a unique opportunity to recognize themselves in the stories that shaped Brazil and to be inspired by powerful trajectories”, adds the teacher.
In addition to being an educational project, “Bonecas Pretas” is “an invitation for the whole of society to rethink what is taught in schools. More than just rescuing the memory of these women, it proposes a new way of telling the history of Brazil, a way that includes and values all voices”, concludes Daniela Torres.
